UNI-T UT25CL Cable Locator, 33 kHz, up to 2.5 m, NCV

The UNI-T UT25CL is a transmitter-and-receiver cable locating system designed for tracing electrical wires, cables and other metallic conductors. It can trace energized and de-energized conductors, help locate opens and short circuits, identify associated fuses or circuit breakers, and trace conductors installed in walls or underground. The transmitter can also identify external voltages from 8 to 480 V AC/DC, while the receiver provides non-contact voltage detection.

Key specifications:
33 kHz • tracing depth up to ~2.5 m • 8–480 V AC/DC • NCV 80–1000 V • CAT III 480 V • IP54

Key features and benefits

  • Tracing of energized and de-energized cables – helps determine cable routes in walls, structures and underground without unnecessary dismantling.
  • Single-pole and dual-pole tracing – under suitable conditions, single-pole tracing depth can reach approximately 2.5 m, while dual-pole tracing reaches approximately 0.5 m.
  • Open- and short-circuit location – helps identify faults in cables and reduce the area that needs to be inspected.
  • Circuit breaker and fuse identification – allows the user to determine which protective device is associated with the tested circuit.
  • Adjustable receiver sensitivity – AUTO and MANUAL modes are available, with 9 manual sensitivity levels from 0 to 8 for more precise cable localization.
  • 3 transmitter output levels – allows the 33 kHz locating signal strength to be adapted to different tracing conditions.
  • Support for up to 8 transmitters – transmitter codes 0–7 allow one receiver to distinguish signals from multiple transmitters.
  • NCV non-contact voltage detection – detects 80–1000 V AC, 50/60 Hz electrical fields without connecting test leads.
  • External voltage identification – the UT25CL-T transmitter can display 8–480 V DC or AC voltage and indicate DC polarity.
  • Clear field indication – backlit LCDs, audible indication, receiver flashlight, mute function and automatic power-off improve usability in installation and maintenance work.

Applications

The UNI-T UT25CL is designed for electrical installation, cable routing and fault-finding tasks involving cables and other metallic conductors. Typical applications include:

  • tracing cable routes inside walls and other structures;
  • tracing underground cable paths;
  • locating cable opens and short circuits;
  • identifying associated fuses and circuit breakers;
  • checking opens and shorts in metallic underfloor heating circuits;
  • tracing metallic water and heating pipes when the transmitter signal can be applied to them;
  • tracing low-voltage and data cables;
  • identifying an individual cable within a cable bundle.

The instrument is suitable for electrical installation, maintenance and troubleshooting work in residential and commercial environments.

Compatibility and limitations

Tracing depth is not a fixed guaranteed value. It depends on the conductor, surrounding materials, tracing method, grounding arrangement and electromagnetic interference.

For single-pole tracing, the manufacturer specifies approximately 0–2.5 m. Achieving the maximum depth requires a suitable separate return loop / independent circuit arrangement. Dual-pole tracing depth is approximately 0–0.5 m.

Metal conduit, cable shielding, adjacent conductors and other conductive structures may attenuate or alter the locating signal, and the connection methods specified in the user manual should be used in such applications.

The NCV function is intended for non-contact detection of 80–1000 V AC, 50/60 Hz voltage. It does not replace contact voltage measurement when the actual voltage value must be determined.

Do not apply more than 480 V AC/DC to the transmitter input terminals.

Construction and controls

The UT25CL consists of a separate UT25CL-T transmitter and UT25CL-R receiver. Both units use backlit LCD displays and audible indication.

The transmitter allows selection of one of eight identification codes and one of three output signal levels. Its display can also indicate the connected AC/DC voltage and DC polarity.

The receiver supports automatic and manual tracing modes. In MANUAL mode, sensitivity can be adjusted from 0 to 8. The display indicates transmitter code, transmitter output level, relative signal strength and other operating information. An integrated flashlight assists when working inside electrical panels or other poorly illuminated locations.

Important safety and operating notes

  • Do not exceed 480 V AC/DC at the transmitter terminals.
  • When working on energized circuits, observe the safety requirements applicable to CAT III measurements and use suitable test leads.
  • Particular care is required when working with voltages above 30 V AC/DC.
  • Inspect the instrument and test lead insulation for damage before use.
  • Tracing performance depends on cable surroundings, connection method, shielding, metallic structures and electromagnetic interference.
  • Before replacing batteries or the transmitter fuse, switch the instrument off and disconnect it from the circuit under test.
