User's manual

UNI-T UT387E Wall Scanner for Metal, Wood and Live Wire Detection, 100 mm

The UNI-T UT387E is a wall scanner designed to locate hidden metal objects, wooden structures and live electrical wiring in walls, ceilings and floors. It features two wood scanning depths, dedicated metal and AC wire detection modes, automatic calibration, a 2.4-inch color display and voice prompts. It is intended for renovation, interior finishing, installation and DIY work where concealed objects should be located before drilling or cutting.

Key specifications:
ferrous metal up to 100 mm • non-ferrous metal up to 80 mm • wood 20 / 38 mm • live 110–220 V wires up to 50 mm • 2.4" color display

Key advantages

  • Ferrous metal detection up to 100 mm – helps locate reinforcing steel, steel profiles, pipes and other metallic objects before drilling or installation work.
  • Non-ferrous metal detection up to 80 mm – suitable for detecting objects such as copper pipes and other non-magnetic metals.
  • Two wood scanning modes – precision mode provides a scanning depth of up to 20 mm, while depth mode extends detection to 38 mm.
  • Live electrical wire detection – the manual specifies detection of live 110–220 V, 50–60 Hz wiring up to 50 mm; for copper wire ≥4 mm², a depth of 40 mm is specified.
  • Automatic calibration – simplifies preparation for scanning and helps provide more consistent detection under suitable operating conditions.
  • Center and signal-strength indication – the display helps determine both the presence of an object and its approximate center.
  • Metal type identification – in metal mode, the scanner can indicate whether the detected object is magnetic or non-magnetic metal.
  • 2.4-inch color display and voice prompts – detection information is presented both visually and audibly for convenient use while working.
  • Built-in 300 mAh lithium battery – rechargeable through USB Type-C; the manufacturer specifies approximately 3000 single measurements on a full charge.
  • Automatic power-off after approximately 5 minutes – reduces unnecessary battery consumption when the scanner is not in use.

Applications

The UT387E is intended for home renovation, interior finishing, furniture and equipment installation and DIY work. It can be used to check a surface before drilling, fastening or cutting where concealed pipes, metal structures, wooden studs or electrical wiring may be present.

The wood/foreign-material scanning mode is intended for materials such as gypsum drywall, plywood and wooden boards. Detection capability depends on the wall material, object shape and size, surface condition, moisture and other environmental factors.

Compatibility and limitations

The UT387E detects wooden structures, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and live AC wiring. It is a wall scanner and does not provide laser distance measurement or wood moisture measurement. Those additional functions are available on other models in the UT387 series.

The wood/foreign-material detection mode is not intended for reliable scanning through concrete, mortar, blocks, metallic surfaces, foil, tiles, glass or other materials with uneven density.

Electrical wire detection depends on the conductor being live. Non-live wires may be detected as metal objects, while thin wires may not be detected under some conditions.

Design and controls

The UT387E provides dedicated controls for wood/foreign-material detection and metal detection. During scanning, the 2.4-inch color display provides signal information and center indication. In metal mode, information about the detected metal type is shown, while the presence of an AC signal is indicated separately.

The sensor area is located on the rear of the scanner and must remain in contact with the scanning surface during operation. Charging is performed through a protected USB Type-C port.

Important operating and safety notes

  • Detection results can be affected by the material, shape and size of the target, wall construction, surface moisture and surrounding electromagnetic fields.
  • Keep the scanner in contact with the surface and move it slowly and evenly while scanning.
  • Metal jewelry, watches and other metal objects close to the scanner may affect detection.
  • During metal-mode calibration, keep the scanner away from metal objects and strong magnetic fields.
  • Concrete, brick and ceramic materials can shield electrical fields and reduce the sensitivity of live-wire detection.
  • Do not rely solely on the scanner when identifying potentially hazardous electrical wiring. Consider wiring plans and other available information before drilling or cutting.
  • For charging, the manufacturer specifies a safe USB Type-C charger with a 5 V output and current of at least 500 mA.
