UNI-T UT683KIT Wire Tracker and Cable Tester, RJ45/RJ11, NCV, Port Flash

The UNI-T UT683KIT is a transmitter-and-receiver kit for tracing network, telephone and other metallic cables and diagnosing common wiring faults. It can locate a specific cable among multiple wires, validate RJ45 conductor sequence, detect open circuits, shorts and miswiring, and check polarity and ringing/AC signals on RJ11 lines. NCV and Port Flash functions provide additional assistance when working with electrical wiring and active network infrastructure.

Key specifications:
RJ45 and RJ11 • ≥3000 m disconnected-line tracking • ≥100 m active-network line • 125 kHz tracing signal • NCV >40 V AC • Port Flash • 1050 mAh rechargeable batteries

Key features

  • Transmitter/receiver cable tracing – identifies individual network, telephone and other metallic cables without removing their insulation.
  • RJ45 cable validation – checks conductor sequence and identifies correct wiring, shorts, opens and miswiring.
  • RJ11 line diagnostics – detects open and short circuits, polarity and ringing/AC signals.
  • Port Flash function – when the transmitter is connected to an active switch, router or network interface, the relevant network-port indicator can flash to help identify the connected port.
  • NCV non-contact voltage detection – the receiver provides audible and visual warning when AC voltage above 40 V is detected near a cable or socket.
  • Adjustable receiver sensitivity – signal strength increases as the probe approaches the target cable, while sensitivity adjustment helps isolate individual wires in dense cable bundles.
  • 125 kHz modulated tracing signal – used for cable identification and tracing.
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack – allows the tracing tone to be monitored through headphones in noisy environments.
  • Built-in flashlight – useful when working in cabinets, racks and poorly illuminated locations.
  • Rechargeable batteries – both units use 3.7 V / 1050 mAh rechargeable lithium batteries; specified operating time is over 8 hours for the transmitter and over 5 hours for the receiver.

Applications

The UNI-T UT683KIT is designed for structured cabling, telecommunications and low-voltage system installation, servicing and troubleshooting.

Typical applications include:

  • tracing RJ45 Ethernet cables;
  • tracing and checking RJ11 telephone lines;
  • tracing metallic wires and cables;
  • identifying a specific cable in a bundle;
  • validating network cable conductor sequence;
  • detecting opens, shorts and miswiring;
  • identifying an active network port with Port Flash;
  • preliminary AC voltage detection using NCV.

The kit is useful for network installers, telecommunications technicians, low-voltage and security-system technicians, and users servicing Ethernet or telephone cabling.

Compatibility and limitations

  • Main interfaces are RJ45 and RJ11.
  • RJ45 cable validation requires the two ends of the cable to be connected to the transmitter and receiver.
  • The manufacturer's RJ45 wiring-fault examples are specified for unshielded cables.
  • Port Flash requires the cable to be connected to active network equipment such as a switch, router or network interface card.
  • The specified ≥3000 m tracing distance applies to disconnected-line tracing and does not represent through-air receiver detection distance.
  • Tracking distance on an active switch/network line is specified as ≥100 m.
  • NCV is an indicative non-contact voltage detection function and is not a substitute for a suitable contact voltage tester when safe isolation must be verified.
  • Do not use the product on live circuits exceeding 60 V AC or 70 V DC.

Design and operation

The transmitter provides RJ45 and RJ11 ports, cable-sequence indicators and Port Flash functionality. The receiver includes the tracing probe, adjustable sensitivity control, NCV detection, audible indication, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and flashlight.

When the target cable is mixed within a dense bundle, receiver sensitivity can be reduced as the probe approaches the strongest signal, helping to distinguish the required cable from adjacent wires.

Important operating and safety notes

  • Do not use the UT683KIT on live circuits exceeding 60 V AC or 70 V DC.
  • Do not use the instrument during thunderstorms.
  • Before tracing an unknown metallic conductor, verify that it does not carry hazardous voltage.
  • NCV is an auxiliary indication only and must not be used by itself to prove that a circuit is de-energized.
  • Do not use or store the instrument in excessively dusty, hot or wet environments.
  • The transmitter and receiver are charged from a 5 V DC supply.
  • At approximately 3.4 V battery voltage the power indicator flashes; at approximately 3.0 V the instrument automatically shuts down.
