Description
Raspberry Pi 5 2GB Single-Board Computer, 2.4GHz Cortex-A76, Wi-Fi 5, PCIe
Raspberry Pi 5 2GB is a compact single-board computer featuring 2GB of LPDDR4X memory, a quad-core 2.4GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor and a VideoCore VII GPU. It is suitable for learning, programming, electronics and automation projects, multimedia applications, lightweight server workloads and compact Linux computer systems. Raspberry Pi 5 provides Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, four USB ports, dual 4Kp60 display output, PCIe, two MIPI camera/display interfaces and the standard 40-pin Raspberry Pi GPIO header.
Key specifications:
2GB LPDDR4X-4267 • 4 × Cortex-A76 2.4GHz • VideoCore VII • 2 × 4Kp60 • Wi-Fi 5 / Bluetooth 5.0 • Gigabit Ethernet • PCIe 2.0 x1
Key advantages
- Quad-core 2.4GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor – the 64-bit BCM2712 processor provides the performance required for Linux desktop use, programming, server services, automation and a wide range of DIY applications.
- 2GB LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM – a cost-effective Raspberry Pi 5 configuration for applications that do not require large amounts of system memory, including lightweight desktop, headless server and embedded workloads.
- VideoCore VII GPU – supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.3 for hardware-accelerated modern graphics applications.
- Dual 4Kp60 display output – two micro-HDMI connectors can drive up to two displays simultaneously, with support for up to 4K at 60Hz and HDR.
- Hardware 4Kp60 HEVC decoding – reduces CPU workload when playing compatible high-resolution HEVC video.
- RP1 I/O controller – Raspberry Pi's in-house I/O controller handles key external interfaces and delivers increased I/O capabilities for the Raspberry Pi 5 platform.
- PCIe 2.0 x1 interface – enables high-speed peripherals; an NVMe SSD can be connected using a separately available M.2 HAT or another suitable adapter.
- Flexible MIPI interfaces – two four-lane MIPI connectors can each operate as a camera or display interface, allowing two cameras, two displays, or one of each.
- Integrated wireless connectivity – dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 / BLE support network, IoT, home automation and wireless peripheral applications.
- RTC and power button – the integrated real-time clock can be backed by an external battery, while the physical power button improves everyday operation.
Applications
Raspberry Pi 5 2GB is suitable for:
- learning programming and Linux;
- electronics and GPIO projects;
- home automation and IoT systems;
- lightweight headless servers and network services;
- information displays and control terminals;
- camera and image-processing projects;
- multimedia and media playback systems;
- robotics and automation prototypes;
- compact dedicated Linux systems.
The 2GB version is particularly appropriate where Raspberry Pi 5 CPU and I/O performance are more important than large RAM capacity. Workloads involving many browser tabs, large software builds, virtual machines, large datasets or other memory-intensive applications may benefit from Raspberry Pi 5 versions with 4GB, 8GB or more RAM.
Compatibility and limitations
- Officially supported Raspberry Pi OS versions include Trixie and the legacy Bookworm release. Raspberry Pi OS versions older than Bookworm do not support Raspberry Pi 5.
- Operating system and data storage can use the microSD slot, which supports high-speed SDR104 mode.
- NVMe SSDs can use the PCIe interface, but a separate M.2 HAT or another suitable PCIe adapter is required.
- Raspberry Pi 5 does not fit the Raspberry Pi 4 case because of changes to component and connector placement.
- Raspberry Pi 5 uses mini 22-pin MIPI connectors for cameras and DSI displays. Standard Raspberry Pi cameras with a 15-pin connector require an appropriate Standard–Mini cable.
- PoE+ is supported through Gigabit Ethernet but requires a separately available compatible PoE+ HAT.
- A 5V / 5A USB-C power supply is recommended to provide the full power budget for USB peripherals. With a 5V / 3A supply, total USB peripheral current is limited to 600mA.
- Active cooling is recommended for sustained high workloads to reduce thermal throttling and maintain performance.

Construction and controls
Raspberry Pi 5 retains the standard 40-pin Raspberry Pi GPIO header while adding dedicated PCIe, RTC battery, UART debug and managed fan connectors. Its two MIPI interfaces are interchangeable, with either connector usable for a compatible camera or display.
A physical power button is fitted directly to the board. The four-pin JST-SH fan connector supports PWM speed control and tachometer feedback, allowing compatible Raspberry Pi 5 cooling fans to be automatically managed according to processor temperature.
Important operating and safety notes
- A high-quality 5V / 5A USB-C power supply is recommended for reliable operation, particularly when powering USB SSDs, hard drives or other high-current peripherals.
- Raspberry Pi 5 can operate from a suitable 5V / 3A supply, but the available USB peripheral power budget is reduced.
- Sustained heavy CPU workloads without sufficient cooling may result in thermal throttling. Active cooling is not mandatory for every application but is recommended for prolonged high workloads.
- Disconnect power before connecting or disconnecting internal MIPI, GPIO, PCIe or similar board-level cables.
- Use a case specifically designed for Raspberry Pi 5 or confirmed compatible with it; Raspberry Pi 4 cases do not fit.
