Description
Raspberry Pi 5 8GB Single-Board Computer, 2.4GHz Cortex-A76, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0
Raspberry Pi 5 8GB is a compact single-board computer featuring a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor and 8GB of LPDDR4X memory. It is suitable for programming, education, electronics and automation projects, multimedia, network services, prototyping, and general-purpose computing. Dual micro-HDMI outputs support two 4K displays at 60Hz, while PCIe, MIPI, USB 3.0, and the standard 40-pin GPIO header provide extensive expansion options.
Key specifications:
4 × Arm Cortex-A76 2.4GHz • 8GB LPDDR4X-4267 • VideoCore VII • Dual 4Kp60 • Wi-Fi 5 • Bluetooth 5.0 BLE • Gigabit Ethernet • PCIe 2.0 x1
Key advantages
- 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU – the Broadcom BCM2712 provides substantially increased processing performance compared with previous Raspberry Pi generations and is suitable for desktop, programming, server, and computing workloads.
- 8GB LPDDR4X-4267 memory – provides additional working memory for multitasking, larger development projects, containers, data processing, and other memory-intensive applications.
- VideoCore VII GPU – supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.3 together with hardware 4Kp60 HEVC decoding.
- Dual 4K displays – two micro-HDMI outputs can simultaneously drive displays at up to 3840 × 2160 pixels at 60Hz and support HDR output.
- High-speed peripheral connectivity – two USB 3.0 ports support simultaneous 5Gbps operation, with two additional USB 2.0 ports available.
- PCIe 2.0 x1 interface – enables connection of high-bandwidth peripherals such as NVMe SSDs through a suitable M.2 HAT or other adapter.
- Flexible camera and display connectivity – two four-lane MIPI camera/display transceivers support combinations of up to two cameras or displays.
- Integrated wired and wireless networking – dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 with BLE, and Gigabit Ethernet support a broad range of connected applications.
- Standard 40-pin GPIO header – provides access to Raspberry Pi hardware interfaces for electronics, sensors, automation, control, and prototyping projects.
- RTC, fan connector, and power button – Raspberry Pi 5 includes a real-time clock, external RTC battery connection, dedicated fan connector, and physical power button.
Applications
Raspberry Pi 5 8GB can be used as a compact Linux computer, programming and educational platform, home-automation controller, small network server, multimedia system, electronics development board, or prototyping platform.
The 8GB memory version is particularly useful for applications involving multiple simultaneous processes, desktop applications, software development environments, containers, or other workloads that benefit from additional RAM.
It is suitable for hobbyists, students, advanced users, programmers, system developers, and electronics specialists.
Compatibility and limitations
- Raspberry Pi OS is the officially recommended operating system. Current Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and the previous Bookworm release support Raspberry Pi 5; versions older than Bookworm are not supported.
- Display connectivity is provided through 2 × micro-HDMI ports. The USB-C port does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode video output.
- PCIe is exposed through a dedicated FPC connector. An appropriate M.2 HAT or other adapter is required for conventional NVMe SSDs and similar PCIe devices.
- Gigabit Ethernet supports PoE+, but a separate compatible PoE+ HAT is required to power the board over Ethernet.
- Raspberry Pi 5 does not include the 3.5mm analogue audio/video TRRS connector used on Raspberry Pi 4. Audio can be output through HDMI, USB, or Bluetooth.
- Raspberry Pi 5 does not fit the Raspberry Pi 4 Case; an enclosure designed for Raspberry Pi 5 is required.
- Under sustained heavy workloads, active cooling helps maintain maximum performance and reduces thermal throttling.
- Boot media, such as a microSD card containing a compatible operating system, is required for normal use.

Construction and controls
Raspberry Pi 5 retains the compact Raspberry Pi board format and standard 40-pin GPIO header while introducing a redesigned I/O architecture based around Raspberry Pi's in-house RP1 I/O controller.
The board includes two micro-HDMI ports, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, two MIPI camera/display connectors, a PCIe FPC connector, microSD slot, USB-C power input, and dedicated connectors for an RTC battery and PWM-controlled fan.
A physical power button provides convenient power control, while the dedicated fan connector allows Raspberry Pi firmware to automatically manage the speed of a compatible cooling fan according to system temperature.
Important operating and safety notes
- Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V / 5A USB-C power supply; the official 27W supply provides sufficient power headroom for the board and attached peripherals.
- A compatible 5V / 3A supply can operate the board, but total downstream USB peripheral current is limited to 600mA.
- High-power USB SSDs, hard drives, or other peripherals may require a 5V / 5A supply or a separately powered USB hub.
- Active cooling is recommended for sustained heavy workloads when maximum performance is required.
- Operate the board in a well-ventilated environment and do not cover the enclosure during operation.
- Place the board on a stable, flat, non-conductive surface and protect it from water and moisture.
- Avoid touching the PCB while powered. If handling is necessary, hold the board by its edges to reduce the risk of electrostatic discharge and mechanical damage.
