Description
UNI-T UT336A Refrigerant Leak Detector, 3 g/year, CFC/HCFC/HFC
The UNI-T UT336A is an electronic refrigerant leak detector with a negative corona sensor designed for locating leaks of halogenated refrigerants in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. It offers a manufacturer-specified maximum sensitivity of 3 g/year, six sensitivity levels, audible and visual alarms, and automatic zero adjustment. A warm-up time of approximately 3 seconds allows testing to begin quickly.
Key specifications:
negative corona sensor • 3 g/year maximum sensitivity • 6 sensitivity levels • CFC / HCFC / HFC • 3 s warm-up
Key features and benefits
- Maximum sensitivity of 3 g/year – enables detection of relatively small refrigerant leaks; this specification describes detector sensitivity, not a quantitative measuring range.
- Negative corona sensor – intended for detecting halogenated refrigerants containing chlorine and/or fluorine.
- 6 sensitivity levels – allow sensitivity to be adjusted according to leak intensity and help progressively narrow down the leak location.
- 6-level visual alarm indication – yellow, orange and red indicators provide a visual indication of detected signal intensity.
- Audible and visual alarm – refrigerant detection is indicated in two ways; the audible alarm can be muted.
- Automatic zero adjustment at power-on – compensates for the background halogen level present in the environment.
- Manual ZERO/RESET function – allows the background level to be reset while tracing a leak, helping to pinpoint the source in contaminated environments.
- Approximately 3-second warm-up time – allows the detector to become ready for use quickly.
- Battery status indication and Auto Power Off – support convenient power management; the unit automatically shuts down after approximately 15 minutes without operation.
- Replaceable probe – the manufacturer specifies an approximate probe life of 50 hours under normal detection conditions.
Applications
The UT336A is designed to locate refrigerant leaks in:
- air-conditioning systems;
- automotive air-conditioning systems;
- refrigeration equipment;
- refrigerators and other cooling appliances;
- refrigerant pipes, joints, valves and other potential leak points.
It is suitable for HVAC/R maintenance, repair and troubleshooting where the presence and location of a halogenated refrigerant leak must be identified.
Compatibility and limitations
The manufacturer specifies the UT336A for three main groups of halogenated refrigerants:
- CFCs, such as R11, R12, R13, R14, R15, R500 and R502;
- HCFCs, such as R22, R123, R141 and R142;
- HFCs, such as R134a, R125, R32 and R410A.
These refrigerants are examples provided by the manufacturer and do not represent an exhaustive list.
The manufacturer does not specify compatibility with HFO refrigerants, CO₂ (R744), ammonia (R717) or hydrocarbon refrigerants, so detection capability for these refrigerants should not be assumed.
The UT336A is a leak detection and localisation instrument, not a quantitative refrigerant concentration meter. The 3 g/year specification represents detector sensitivity and should not be interpreted as a measuring range or measurement accuracy.

Construction and operation
The detector uses a flexible sensing probe that can be positioned around pipe connections, valves and other difficult-to-reach potential leak points. Six sensitivity levels are available, with separate visual indication for the selected sensitivity and the strength of the detected signal.
The RESET function allows the current ambient halogen concentration to be treated as the new background level. This is useful when moving closer to a leak and narrowing down its exact location.
Important operating and safety notes
- Move the probe slowly along the pipeline and around suspected leak points.
- The manufacturer recommends that the refrigeration system be at normal pressure or that the section being tested have at least 50 PSI pressure; insufficient pressure may result in a leak being missed.
- Strong airflow may disperse escaping refrigerant and reduce detection effectiveness; shield the test area from airflow when necessary.
- Prevent the probe from contacting oil, dust, moisture or solvents, as contamination can affect sensitivity.
- In an environment already containing halogens, use the RESET function to compensate for the background level.
- If the probe alarms or becomes unstable in clean air, it may require cleaning or replacement.
- Remove the batteries if the instrument will not be used for an extended period.
