Description
Raspberry Pi 5 1GB Single-Board Computer, Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz, Wi-Fi 5, PCIe 2.0
Raspberry Pi 5 1GB is a compact single-board computer based on the quad-core 64-bit Broadcom BCM2712 Arm Cortex-A76 processor, with 1GB of LPDDR4X-4267 memory and an extensive range of I/O interfaces. It is suitable for programming, education, electronics and automation projects, lightweight servers, multimedia systems and embedded applications. The 1GB version retains the Raspberry Pi 5 processor, graphics and I/O capabilities while targeting workloads with modest memory requirements.
Key specifications:
BCM2712 • 4 × Cortex-A76 @ 2.4 GHz • 1GB LPDDR4X-4267 • Wi-Fi 5 • Gigabit Ethernet • 2 × micro-HDMI 4Kp60 • PCIe 2.0 x1
Key advantages
Quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor – the Broadcom BCM2712 runs at 2.4 GHz and includes 512KB of L2 cache per core and 2MB of shared L3 cache, providing strong processing performance for Linux, programming and automation applications.
1GB LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM – the lowest-memory Raspberry Pi 5 configuration, intended for applications that do not require large amounts of RAM. CPU and principal I/O capabilities remain consistent with higher-memory Raspberry Pi 5 variants.
VideoCore VII GPU – supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.3 for accelerated graphical interfaces, multimedia and compatible GPU-assisted applications.
Dual 4Kp60 display output – two micro-HDMI connectors can drive up to two 4K displays simultaneously at up to 60 Hz. HDR and hardware 4Kp60 HEVC decoding are supported.
High-speed USB connectivity – includes 2 × USB 3.0 and 2 × USB 2.0 ports. Both USB 3.0 ports support simultaneous operation at up to 5 Gb/s.
Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth – dual-band 2.4/5 GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 with Bluetooth Low Energy provide built-in network and peripheral connectivity.
Gigabit Ethernet with optional PoE+ – the RJ45 interface provides up to 1 Gb/s wired networking. PoE+ operation requires a separate compatible PoE+ HAT.
PCIe 2.0 x1 expansion – the dedicated PCI Express interface supports NVMe storage and other PCIe peripherals through a Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ or another suitable adapter.
Two configurable MIPI camera/display interfaces – two 4-lane MIPI transceivers can be used for CSI-2 cameras or DSI displays, allowing two cameras, two displays, or one of each.
RTC and physical power button – an onboard real-time clock can be backed up by an external battery, while the power button provides convenient hardware power control.
Applications
Raspberry Pi 5 1GB is suitable for:
- learning Linux and programming;
- electronics, GPIO and automation projects;
- home automation and IoT controllers;
- lightweight network servers and services;
- NAS or media-centre projects with modest memory requirements;
- digital signage and information terminals;
- robotics and prototyping;
- retro-gaming and multimedia projects;
- applications that benefit from Raspberry Pi 5 CPU performance but do not require several gigabytes of RAM.
The 1GB configuration is primarily intended for workloads with limited memory requirements. For heavy desktop multitasking, large development environments or other memory-intensive applications, a Raspberry Pi 5 variant with more RAM may be more appropriate.
Compatibility and limitations
- Current Raspberry Pi OS versions designed for Raspberry Pi 5 are supported. Raspberry Pi states that Trixie and legacy Bookworm are compatible; versions older than Bookworm are not supported on Raspberry Pi 5.
- The standard storage medium is microSD, including support for high-speed SDR104 mode.
- NVMe SSDs can be connected through the PCIe interface, but a separate M.2 HAT or other compatible adapter is required.
- The PCIe interface is officially certified for PCIe 2.0 operation. PCIe Gen 3 can be enabled in software, but Raspberry Pi does not certify Gen 3 operation and warns that it may be unstable.
- PoE+ requires a separate PoE+ HAT.
- An external RTC battery is required to retain RTC operation when main power is disconnected.
- Raspberry Pi 5 uses mini 22-pin, 0.5 mm-pitch MIPI connectors. Some older Raspberry Pi cameras and displays therefore require a suitable Standard–Mini FFC cable.
- Raspberry Pi 5 does not fit the Raspberry Pi 4 case.
- Raspberry Pi 5 has no built-in 3.5 mm analogue audio output. Audio can be provided through HDMI, Bluetooth, USB or a compatible audio HAT.
- The USB-C connector is used for power and does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode video output.
- Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best sustained performance under heavy loads.

Construction and controls
Raspberry Pi 5 retains the standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO header, but several connectors differ from Raspberry Pi 4. Cameras and DSI displays use two smaller universal 22-pin MIPI connectors, while PCIe peripherals use a dedicated FFC connector.
The RP1 I/O controller handles a substantial part of Raspberry Pi 5 peripheral connectivity and provides increased USB 3 bandwidth. The board also includes a physical power button, RTC battery connector, dedicated UART debug connector and a four-pin connector for a temperature-controlled fan.
Important operating notes
A high-quality 5 V / 5 A USB-C power supply is recommended. Raspberry Pi 5 can operate from a 5 V / 3 A supply, but the available total current for USB peripherals is then restricted to 600 mA.
For sustained high processor loads, Raspberry Pi recommends an Active Cooler or another suitable active cooling solution. At elevated temperatures the processor can automatically reduce its clock frequency to control temperature.
Disconnect power completely before connecting or disconnecting PCIe, MIPI or other internal board peripherals.
